Study Finds Nearly Two-Thirds of Supermarket Baby Foods - Addressing the Nutrients Journal Findings

The headlines read: Study Finds Nearly Two-Thirds of Supermarket Baby Foods Are Unhealthy and Nearly Two-Thirds of Supermarket Baby Foods are Unhealthy, Study Finds - it’s all over in the press, CNN, Forbes, New York Post, Newsweek, CBS News, People and local news outlets.

Researchers analyzed over 650 foods made for babies and toddlers from six months to 36 months: terrifyingly enough, over 60% of these foods failed to meet recommended World Health Organization guidelines for infant and toddler foods(1).  The study further found:

  • 70% didn’t satisfy the guidance/recommendation on protein content
  • 25% failed to meet calorie recommendations
  • 44% exceeded total sugar requirements
  • Almost none of the foods met all of the WHO standards for advertising, which puts a focus on clear labeling, ingredients and health claims

Researchers visited eight of the top 10 grocery store chains in the US (Walmart, Kroger, Costco, Ahold Delhaize, Publix, Sam’s Club, Target, and Aldi) in Raleigh, North Carolina, between March and May 2023 (2). Globowl jars were not included in this study as we aren't sold on the shelves of the retail chains that were part of it. One astounding finding: some of the leading baby food 'pouches' have more sugar than a serving of Lucky Charms!

Which is precisely WHY Globowl needs to make its way into more stores because it's the RIGHT product at the RIGHT time. Our babies deserve better.

Pediatrician Dr. Payal Adhikari recommends Globowl to her patients. She talks about the study (and Globowl!) on FOX's morning show.

Dr Elizabeth Dunford, Research Fellow at The George Institute, and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition at the University of North Carolina added:

“Early childhood is a crucial period of rapid growth and when taste preferences and dietary habits form, potentially paving the way for the development of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and some cancers later in life.”

Globowl gets it right. We are non-perishable (without the use of any artificial preservatives), served in glass jars to avoid leaching plastic into our organic meals, and we are set apart from many of the pouches on the market because of our 0g of added sugar. Additionally, every claim we make is reviewed by FDA attorneys and experts to ensure that they are accurate and that our customers have full transparency into our ingredients and processes. No hidden or misleading messaging or health claims here!
